The brief
Short answer
Lead with the truth: the FTC Cooling-Off Rule lets buyers cancel covered door-to-door sales within three business days for free. Publish that plainly, and offer paid help only where it adds value, after the window or in disputes over missing notices, refused refunds, financing or card charges. Never promise a cancellation.
- Fact 01The FTC Cooling-Off Rule covers sales of $25 or more made at the buyer's home and $130 or more at other places away from the seller's business, such as hotel rooms, convention centers and fairgrounds.2
- Fact 02A seller must refund all payments within 10 business days after receiving a valid cancellation notice under the Cooling-Off Rule.3
- Fact 03California gives senior citizen buyers five business days to cancel a home solicitation contract instead of three.7
- Fact 04A credit card issuer is subject to the cardholder's claims and defenses on a purchase over $50 made in the cardholder's state or within 100 miles, after a good-faith attempt to resolve it with the seller.13
Door-to-door sale cancellation is the one contract exit niche where the core service is already free. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule lets buyers cancel covered sales within three business days at no cost, by mail, with no reason required. An honest cancellation firm builds its reputation on saying that first, then helping in the cases where the free route did not work: the window passed, the seller never gave a proper notice, the seller refused a valid cancellation, or a lender or card issuer is now involved. This page covers how those clients search, what a case is worth, and the rules that shape what you can sell.

How do clients find a contract cancellation firm today?
Mostly by searching the rule itself. In the Strive analysis of Google Keyword Planner data from September 2025 to August 2026, this niche had only 26 distinct terms nationally, with a median top-of-page bid estimate (high range) of $2.751. Among the terms that fit this hub, “3 day rescission period”, “buying a car cooling off period”, “cancel contract” and “contract cancellation letter” each sat in Google’s 100 to 1,000 monthly range1. “3 day rescission period” carried the highest bid estimate of those, $42.301. No state report met the publishing threshold1.
What that tells you:
- Searchers want to do it themselves. “Cancellation letter” and “cooling off period” searches come from people looking for a template and a deadline. Give them both, free.
- Many searchers are confused about coverage. Car buyers search for a cooling-off period that the FTC rule does not give for sales on a dealer’s lot25. Clear answers earn trust.
- The market is small. Plan for a modest, national audience, not a high-volume lead machine.

What is a contract cancellation client and a lead worth?
There is no public fee benchmark. Common models are attorney review and demand letters, flat-fee dispute packages from non-lawyer services, and free help from nonprofits and government agencies. The worked example below fits a small flat-fee dispute service.
Worked example: what one lead is worth
Illustrative inputs, not sourced benchmarks.
- Flat fee for a dispute package (timeline, demand letter, card or lender dispute, agency complaints): $200
- Leads who are outside the free window or in a dispute: 50%
- Of those, leads who buy: 30%
- Margin after staff time: 70%
Lead to client rate: 0.50 × 0.30 = 15%. Gross profit per client: $200 × 0.70 = $140. Gross profit per lead: 0.15 × $140 = $21.
Clicks are cheap here, which helps. At $3 a click, close to the niche’s median bid estimate of $2.751, and a 10% click-to-lead rate, a lead costs $30, which loses money at a $21 lead value. At a 15% click-to-lead rate it costs $20 and roughly breaks even. Low fees only work with very efficient pages and very little staff time per case.
Note the first input. Half of the leads in this example are still inside the free window, and they should be told how to cancel at no cost and sent on their way. That is the honest service, and it is also how you earn the reviews and links that bring the paying half.

Which marketing channels work best for contract cancellation firms?
| Rank | Channel | Pricing model | Best for | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Free guides and templates | Time | Every firm | Most readers need nothing more |
| 2 | Paid search on dispute terms | Pay per click | Low-cost dispute services | Small volume |
| 3 | Referrals from consumer attorneys and agencies | Relationship | Dispute and legal models | Slow to build |
| 4 | Google Business Profile and Local Services Ads | Free or pay per lead | Law firms with a real office | Not available to virtual offices |
| 5 | Reviews | Free | Trust | Fake and controlled reviews are banned |
Free guides and templates
Publish the deadline calculator and a cancellation letter template. The FTC’s own guidance gives the mechanics: the window runs to midnight of the third business day after the sale, Saturday counts as a business day, Sundays and federal holidays do not, and a buyer who did not get a form can write a letter and send it by certified mail6. Explain what the seller must do in return: refund all payments, return any trade-in and cancel any note within 10 business days3.
Local listings
Google’s Local Services Ads include “Contract lawyer services” and other lawyer categories18, which fit attorney-led cancellation practices. A Business Profile needs a real location; Google says a virtual office is not eligible19.
Referral partners
Consumer attorneys who do not take small matters, legal aid offices and senior centers see these cases. For older buyers, California’s longer five-day window7 is a useful talking point with senior centers. If you are a lawyer, check your bar’s rules on paying for referrals before agreeing to any fee.
Reviews
The FTC’s 2024 rule bans fake reviews, incentives tied to positive reviews, undisclosed insider reviews, and presenting a site you control as an independent review source17. “Best cancellation service” pages owned by a provider must say so.
05Chapter3 min
Which laws and rules affect how contract cancellation firms get clients?
This is not legal advice. Talk to a consumer protection attorney in your state.
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule
The rule covers sales of consumer goods or services where the seller personally solicits the sale, including after an invitation from the buyer, and the buyer agrees somewhere other than the seller’s place of business, such as their home, workplace, or a hotel room, convention center, fairground or restaurant2. The price thresholds are $25 at the buyer’s home and $130 elsewhere2. It excludes, among others, sales after negotiations at the seller’s permanent store, sales made entirely by mail or phone, sales of real estate, insurance or securities, and transactions that carry a federal TILA rescission right2. Vehicles sold at temporary locations by sellers with a permanent place of business are exempt5.
For covered sales the seller must give a dated contract or receipt in the language of the sales pitch, with a cancellation statement near the signature line, two copies of a completed notice of cancellation, and an oral explanation of the right3. The seller may not include a waiver of the right, misrepresent it, or refuse a valid cancellation3.
The right is free. A buyer cancels by mailing a signed form or letter6. Your marketing must never imply that a buyer needs your service, or must pay, to cancel within the window. Representing otherwise risks a deceptive practice claim under FTC Act Section 515 and state law.
What happens after three days
This is where paid help can be honest. The questions to work through with a client:
- Was the notice given correctly? A seller that skipped the written notice, the forms or the oral explanation, or misrepresented the right, violated the rule3. California ties its cancellation window to an agreement that complies with its notice rules7, so the question of whether the clock ever started matters there. A consumer attorney decides what that means for a given contract.
- Did the seller honor a valid cancellation? Failing to refund within 10 business days is itself a violation3.
- Does state law add time or remedies? States can give more protection than the FTC rule, and the FTC rule does not override them unless they conflict4. California gives five business days to buyers aged 65 or older78. Florida gives three business days and says the cancellation notice need not take any particular form11. Texas gives three business days9, and a violation of its cancellation chapter is also a deceptive trade practice with the remedies of the Texas DTPA10.
- Was the purchase financed? If the seller arranged the credit, the contract should carry the Holder notice, which lets the buyer raise claims and defenses against the seller with the lender, capped at amounts paid12. If the financing put a lien on the buyer’s home, federal rescission rules apply instead, with a window that can extend up to three years when required notices or disclosures were missing14.
- Was it paid by credit card? A card issuer is subject to the cardholder’s claims and defenses if the purchase was over $50, was made in the cardholder’s state or within 100 miles of their address, and the cardholder first tried in good faith to resolve it with the seller13.
Lawyers and non-lawyers
Disputes that may end in a claim or lawsuit call for a lawyer’s judgment, which is why an attorney-led model fits this niche. Lawyers follow their state’s rules on marketing and paying for leads. In Texas, a lawyer may not pay a non-lawyer for referrals, and may pay a lead generator only if it does not recommend the lawyer or imply it has analyzed the person’s legal problem16. Non-lawyer services should stick to information, templates and organization.
06Chapter1 min
When does demand peak?
No verified public source gives a seasonal pattern for door-to-door cancellation requests, and the state data is too thin to show one1. Many operators watch local news and complaint trends for the product types they handle. Track your own inquiries by week.
07Chapter1 min
What mistakes do contract cancellation firms make?
- Charging for the free right. Any fee for cancelling inside the window, without first explaining the free route, is the fastest path to complaints615.
- Promising outcomes. Whether a late cancellation works depends on notices, state law and the seller’s response.
- Getting coverage wrong. Dealer-lot car sales, phone and online sales and real estate are outside the FTC rule25.
- Ignoring financing and card routes. The Holder Rule and the card dispute rules often matter more than the cancellation window1213.
- Giving legal advice without a lawyer. Keep non-lawyer services to information and paperwork.
- Buying expensive leads. At a $21 lead value, even cheap clicks need high conversion1.

Bottom line
- The FTC Cooling-Off Rule is free to use; say so first, and never imply a fee is needed inside the three business days.
- Honest paid help starts after the window: missing or misrepresented notices, refused refunds, financed purchases and card disputes.
- State laws such as California’s five-day senior rule and Texas’s DTPA link add real protection.
- Demand is small and clicks are cheap, so lean on free guides, referrals and reviews.
- Never promise that a contract will be cancelled.
10Questions owners ask5 questions
Questions owners ask
Q01Does a buyer need to pay anyone to cancel a door-to-door sale?
No. Within the three business day window, a buyer cancels by signing and mailing the cancellation form the seller gave them, or a letter if no form was given. The FTC suggests certified mail for proof. Any firm in this space should say so before offering a paid service.
Q02Is there a three-day right to cancel a car purchase?
Not under the FTC Cooling-Off Rule for a car bought at the dealer's lot. The rule excludes sales completed at the seller's permanent place of business and exempts vehicles sold at temporary locations by sellers that have a permanent one. Some dealers and states offer other options, so check the contract and state law.
Q03What can a cancellation firm honestly help with after three days?
Cases where the seller did not give the required notice, misrepresented the right to cancel, or refused a valid cancellation; financed purchases where the Holder Rule may let the buyer raise claims against the lender; card purchases that can be disputed; and complaints to the state attorney general. None of these comes with a guaranteed result.
Q04Should a cancellation firm be run by a lawyer?
For disputes that may end in a demand letter, claim or lawsuit, an attorney-led model is the cleanest, since a lawyer can advise on the claim itself. Non-lawyer services can provide information, templates and organization, and should check their state's rules on the unauthorized practice of law.
Q05What is the best way to get contract cancellation clients?
Lead with the truth: the FTC Cooling-Off Rule lets buyers cancel covered door-to-door sales within three business days for free, so publish that plainly. Demand is small and clicks are cheap, so lean on free guides and letter templates, referrals from consumer attorneys, legal aid offices and senior centers, and reviews. Offer paid help only where it adds value, after the window or in disputes, and never promise a cancellation.
