The brief

Short answer

Treat it as guest acquisition, not service leads. Publish clear package prices, list on a booking marketplace that charges only on booked hunts, work the January convention season, and sell year-round exotic hunts to fill months outside deer season. Most of the value is in repeat hunters and their friends, so track rebooking, not just inquiries.

  • Fact 01In 2022, 14.4 million Americans 16 and older hunted, and hunters spent $45.2 billion, including $12.3 billion on trip-related costs, per the USFWS National Survey.2
  • Fact 02On private property in Texas, there are no state bag limits, possession limits or closed seasons on exotic animals such as axis deer, aoudad and blackbuck, but a hunting license is required.5
  • Fact 03Texas requires a Hunting Lease License from any landowner or agent who leases hunting rights for pay, and the license must be displayed on the property.6
  • Fact 04BookYourHunt says outfitters on its platform pay a commission on hunts booked through it and must show the same prices they quote directly.4
  • Fact 05The 2027 Dallas Safari Club Convention runs January 7 to 10 in Atlanta with more than 1,000 exhibits.11

A hunting ranch does not sell a repair. It sells a trip. The buyer is often from another state, plans weeks or months ahead, brings friends, and comes back if the hunt was good. That makes this a guest acquisition business, closer to a lodge or a fishing charter than to a plumber. The useful numbers are cost per booked hunter, rebooking rate and party size, not cost per lead.

How do hunters find an exotic hunting ranch today?

They search, but a lot of hunting search is curiosity. In the Strive analysis of Google Keyword Planner data from September 2025 to August 2026, 378 distinct terms were tracked nationally1. The biggest were “axis buck”, “duck hunts” and “aoudad”, each in the 10,000 to 100,000 monthly range1. Many people searching an animal’s name want photos or facts, not a booking.

The buying terms sit one tier lower, at 1,000 to 10,000 a month: “whitetail outfitter”, “hunting lodge”, “deer hunt near me”, “hunting outfitters”, “hunts near me”, “trophy hunting” and “big game hunts”1. Google’s top-of-page bid estimates (high range) are low for this industry: the national median across all 378 terms was $1.15, and most buying terms were between about $2 and $3.201. Low bid estimates suggest relatively little advertiser competition for these clicks.

Patterns across the 10 state reports:

  • Texas hunts are searched from other states. Texas-named terms such as “whitetail deer hunts in texas” and “axis hunts in texas” appeared in the top lists of 4 of the 9 state reports outside Texas (Colorado, Florida, Georgia and Louisiana)1. Your buyers are often hundreds of miles away.
  • “Near me” is everywhere. “Hunts near me” or similar appeared in 9 of the 10 reports1. Drive-in hunters want something within a few hours.
  • Ducks and hogs are broad demand. Duck hunt terms appeared in all 10 reports and hog hunting in 81. Hog and bird hunts can be lower-priced entry products.
  • Texas leads, with a caveat. Texas is among the top markets for demand, but Google’s Texas volumes for this industry are unusually high relative to population, so treat them with care1.

03Chapter2 min

What is a hunter worth to a ranch?

Start with the market. The USFWS 2022 National Survey counted 14.4 million hunters 16 and older, of whom 11.5 million hunted big game2. Hunters spent $45.2 billion in 2022, including $12.3 billion on trip-related costs such as food, lodging and transportation, and trip-related spending averaged $857 per hunter2. The survey’s 2022 methods changed, so it should not be compared directly with earlier surveys2.

Prices for Texas hunts vary widely. BookYourHunt, a hunting marketplace, listed 137 Texas hunting trips from 30 outfitters, with axis deer hunts starting from $1,830, sheep (such as aoudad) from $1,600, deer from $600 and hogs from $3903. These are “starting from” prices on one marketplace on the day accessed, so treat them as vendor data and a floor, not an average.

Worked example: what one booked hunter is worth

Illustrative inputs, not sourced benchmarks. Replace them with your own numbers.

  • Average exotic package per hunter, including lodging and one animal: $2,500 (above the $1,830 axis starting price3, since packages often add lodging and trophy fees)
  • Inquiries that book: 20%
  • Gross margin after guide wages, food, lodging, processing and animal cost: 45%
  • Hunters who rebook the next year: 40%

Gross profit per booking: $2,500 × 0.45 = $1,125. Gross profit per inquiry: 0.20 × $1,125 = $225. Value of a hunter who keeps rebooking at 40% a year: $1,125 ÷ (1 minus 0.40) = about $1,875 over time.

Now compare two ways to get that booking:

  • Paid search. Assume an illustrative $2.50 per click, near Google’s top-of-page bid estimates (high range) for buying terms1, and 3% of clicks becoming an inquiry. An inquiry then costs about $83. At a 20% booking rate, a booked hunter costs about $417 in ad spend.
  • Commission marketplace. If a platform takes an illustrative 10% commission, a $2,500 booking costs $250, paid only when the hunt books.

Decision rules that follow:

  • Know your cost per booked hunter by channel. A cheap click is not a cheap guest if most clicks are curious about axis deer.
  • Count the party, not the person. One inquiry often books a group. Track bookings per inquiry and hunters per booking.
  • Price the rebook. A returning hunter costs nothing to acquire. Offer next year’s dates before the guest leaves.
  • Sell the off-season. Exotics on private land can be hunted year-round in Texas5, so empty summer and spring weeks can be filled with exotic or hog packages.

Where do hunting ranch leads come from?

Ranked for a small or mid-size exotic ranch. Google Local Services Ads are not available: Google’s eligible US categories do not include hunting, outfitters or guided hunts12.

Repeat hunters and referrals

The best ranches book their next season before the current one ends. Ask every guest for next year’s dates at checkout, keep a list of who hunted what, and give returning hunters first choice of weekends. Ask happy parties to bring one new hunter next time. Reviews matter here too, both on Google and on any marketplace you use.

Your website

Hunters compare prices before they call. Publish packages with what is included (lodging, meals, guide, processing, trophy fees, license help), the species available, the hunting method (blind, spot and stalk, bow), and the license each guest needs. If you list on a marketplace, its rules may require the same price on your own site4.

Booking marketplaces

BookYourHunt says hunters use it free, that outfitters pay it a commission from hunts booked through the platform, that the hunter pays the outfitter directly, and that outfitters must display the same prices they quote in direct contact4. It verifies outfitters through membership in a hunting association or a reliable recommendation4. The commission-only model is a good fit for a new ranch with no audience yet: you pay only when a hunt books. The trade-offs are the commission itself and price parity, which limits private discounts.

Hunting conventions and shows

Large conventions put outfitters in front of hunters planning future trips. The 2027 Dallas Safari Club Convention runs January 7 to 10 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, with more than 1,000 exhibits and banquets featuring live auctions of hunts11. Donating a hunt to a banquet auction can put your ranch in front of buyers who pay for hunts. A common approach for a smaller ranch is to start with a donated hunt and regional shows before paying for a booth.

Google Business Profile

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity (the page’s heading for the third factor is “prominence”), and that more reviews and positive ratings can help13. “Hunting lodge” and “hunts near me” are local-intent searches1. List the ranch with accurate hours, a booking phone line that someone answers, and photos of the lodge, blinds and terrain, not just trophy shots.

Bid on buying terms (“hunting lodge”, “hunting outfitters”, “exotic hunts”, “[species] hunts in texas”) rather than species names alone1. Add negatives for facts and curiosity (pictures, facts, size, weight, “what is”), and test geographic targeting toward the out-of-state markets that search for Texas hunts1.

Social media

Video of the ranch, the lodge and the animals sells trips. Before you run ads, read each platform’s current policies on weapons and hunting content, since each platform sets its own rules, and keep organic posts respectful of non-hunters who will also see them.

05Chapter3 min

Which licenses and rules affect how hunting ranches market?

Rules decide what you can sell, to whom and how you can advertise it. Texas is the example here because it is among the top markets in the data1.

Hunting Lease License (Texas). A landowner or landowner’s agent who leases hunting rights to another person for pay needs a Hunting Lease License, and it must be displayed on the property6. Prices are $79 for 1 to 499 acres, $147 for 500 to 999 acres and $252 for 1,000 acres or more6.

Exotics (Texas). TPWD defines an exotic as any animal not native to Texas, such as aoudad, axis deer, elk, sika deer, fallow deer, red deer, blackbuck and nilgai5. On private property there are no state bag or possession limits, no required means and methods, and no closed seasons on exotics5. A hunting license is still required, and it is unlawful to hunt an exotic without a license (Class C misdemeanor) or without the landowner’s permission (Class A misdemeanor)5.

Guest licenses. A hunting license is required of any person, resident or nonresident, of any age, to hunt any animal in Texas, with listed exceptions6. Nonresidents can buy a special 5-day small game and exotic license for $48, which does not cover white-tailed or mule deer; for adult nonresidents hunting white-tailed or mule deer, TPWD says the nonresident general hunting license ($315) is the only valid license (a $7 youth license is available to hunters under 17)6. No hunting license is needed to hunt feral hogs on private property with landowner authorization5. Put license guidance on your booking confirmation.

Captive dangerous animals. Texas bans killing a dangerous wild animal (such as a lion, tiger, bear or elephant) held in captivity or released from captivity to be killed, and bans conducting, promoting, advertising or assisting such a hunt5. The same rule covers captive mountain lions5. Do not advertise these hunts.

Endangered exotics. Federal rules allow take and trophy hunting of U.S. captive-bred scimitar-horned oryx, addax and dama gazelle only under listed conditions, including keeping accurate records of births, deaths and transfers8. If you offer these species, talk to a wildlife attorney before you advertise.

Outfitter licensing in other states. Some states regulate outfitters directly. Colorado runs an Office of Outfitters Registration within its Division of Professions and Occupations9, and Idaho has an Outfitters and Guides Licensing Board, which publishes a sample operating plan for new outfitter applicants10. Check the state where the hunt happens, not just where you are based.

Rules change, so confirm with TPWD or your state wildlife agency, and talk to a lawyer where a rule decides the answer.

06Chapter1 min

When does demand peak for hunting ranches?

  • Deer season sets the peak. In Texas, 2026 to 2027 white-tailed deer archery runs October 3 to November 6, 2026, and the general season runs November 7, 2026 to January 3, 2027 in the North Zone and to January 17, 2027 in the South Zone7. Expect the most calls and the most competition for weekends in fall.
  • Exotics fill the rest of the year. With no closed season on exotics on private land5, spring and summer can be sold as exotic, hog and management hunts. BookYourHunt notes a Texas hunt can mean heat above 90 degrees F4, so plan early-morning schedules and say so in the listing.
  • January is convention season. The 2027 Dallas Safari Club Convention runs January 7 to 1011, a natural time to sell next season’s dates.

The keyword data here is a 12-month total, so it does not show month-by-month search swings1.

07Chapter1 min

What mistakes do hunting ranches make with guests?

  1. Paying for curiosity clicks. “Axis buck” is a big search, but many searchers only want to see one1. Bid on buying terms.
  2. Hiding prices. Hunters compare packages, and marketplaces show prices up front34.
  3. Slow replies. An out-of-state party often asks several ranches at once. Answer the same day.
  4. No rebooking ask. The cheapest hunter to book is the one who just left.
  5. License confusion. A nonresident who bought the 5-day exotic license cannot hunt whitetail6. Tell guests exactly what to buy.
  6. Advertising hunts the law bans. Captive dangerous animal hunts cannot be advertised in Texas5.

A 90-day plan for a small hunting ranch

Plan 08.A / Days 1 to 90 3 phases

Days 1 to 30Fix the base

  • Week 1: Pull 2 years of bookings. For each party, record source, hunters, species, price, and whether they rebooked. Calculate cost per booked hunter by channel.
  • Week 1: Confirm your Hunting Lease License is current and displayed6.
  • Week 2: Rebuild the packages page with prices, inclusions, methods, dates and license guidance56.
  • Week 3: Complete your Google Business Profile with lodge, blind and terrain photos13.
  • Week 4: Email every past guest with next season’s dates and a returning-hunter window.

Days 31 to 60Add bookings you can measure

  • List on one booking marketplace with your full package set, priced the same as your site4.
  • Launch one paid search campaign on buying terms with curiosity negatives, targeting your top out-of-state markets1.
  • Build summer and spring exotic and hog packages to fill months outside deer season5.
  • Set a same-day reply rule for every inquiry.

Days 61 to 90Shows and measurement

  • Decide on January: a donated auction hunt, a regional show or a booth at a major convention11.
  • Compare cost per booked hunter for marketplace, paid search and referrals. Cut the worst.
  • Ask every fall party for a review and next year’s dates before they leave.
  • If you hunt or plan to hunt outside Texas, check that state’s outfitter rules910.

09Chapter1 min

Bottom line

  • A hunting ranch sells trips. Measure cost per booked hunter and rebooking, not cost per lead.
  • In the worked example, a hunter who rebooks is worth about $1,875 in gross profit, so retention beats acquisition.
  • Search is big but often curious; bid on buying terms and target the out-of-state markets that search for Texas hunts1.
  • Commission marketplaces charge only when a hunt books, which suits new ranches, but they require price parity4.
  • Texas allows year-round exotic hunting on private land with a licensed hunter, requires a Hunting Lease License to sell hunting rights, and bans advertising captive dangerous animal hunts56.

10Questions owners ask5 questions

Questions owners ask

Q01Do hunters need a license to hunt exotics on a Texas ranch?

Yes. Texas Parks and Wildlife requires a hunting license to hunt exotic animals, and hunting one without a license is a Class C misdemeanor. Nonresidents can buy a 5-day special small game and exotic license for $48, which does not cover white-tailed or mule deer. Tell guests which license they need before they arrive.

Q02Does a ranch need a license to sell hunts in Texas?

A landowner or agent who leases hunting rights to others for pay needs a Hunting Lease License, priced by acreage from $79 to $252, displayed on the property. Other rules can apply depending on species, guiding, lodging and food service, so check with TPWD and your county.

Q03Are booking marketplaces worth it for hunting ranches?

Often, for new ranches. Platforms like BookYourHunt charge outfitters a commission on hunts booked through them, so you pay only when a hunt books. Compare that commission with your cost per booked hunt from ads, and remember the platform requires the same prices you quote directly.

Q04When do hunters book exotic hunts?

Exotics on Texas private land have no closed season, so they can be sold all year. Many hunters plan around white-tailed deer season, whose general season runs from November into January in Texas, and large hunting conventions such as Dallas Safari Club's are held in January.

Q05Can a ranch use Google Local Services Ads?

No. Google's eligible US categories do not include hunting, outfitters or guided hunts. Ranches rely on Google Business Profile, their own website, paid search, marketplaces, shows and referrals.
