The brief

Short answer

Own the "fence company near me" search: a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews and real job photos, then Local Services Ads, since fencing is an eligible category. Fence clicks are cheap next to other trades, so paid search can pay. Quote fast, handle permits, surveys and 811 for the customer, and build builder and pool partners.

  • Fact 01"Fence company near me" and two close variants were each searched 100,000 to 1 million times a month nationally, with top-of-page bid estimates of $26.46.1
  • Fact 02Fence installation averages $3,277 nationally, with most homeowners paying about $23 per linear foot (vendor data).2
  • Fact 03Standard homeowners policies cover fences as other structures, with a combined limit for all other structures of 10% of the dwelling limit.17
  • Fact 04Florida's residential pool barrier standard calls for a barrier at least 4 feet high on the outside, with outward-opening, self-closing and self-latching gates.16

Fencing is a planned purchase with a short decision window. A homeowner gets a dog, a pool, a new neighbor or a storm-damaged section, searches for a fence company, gets two or three quotes and books within weeks. Clicks are cheaper than in most home trades, the category is eligible for Local Services Ads, and the winners are usually the companies that quote fastest and handle the paperwork the customer does not want to touch.

02Chapter2 min

How do customers find a fence company today?

In the Strive analysis of Google Keyword Planner data from September 2025 to August 2026, the most-searched fence terms nationally were “fence company near me”, “fence builders near me” and “fence co near me”, each in the 100,000 to 1 million monthly search range1. Keyword Planner gives ranges, not exact counts.

What the data says:

  • Searchers want a company. At least one of those three terms sits in the highest search range in all 42 state reports1. That favors the Map Pack and Local Services Ads, where names, ratings and a call button show first.
  • Clicks are cheap by trade standards. Google’s top-of-page bid estimates (high range) were $26.46 for the top three terms, $27.25 for “fence contractors near me”, $22.43 for “fence installation” and $19.70 for “fence repair”, against a median of $6.32 across about 2,160 distinct terms1. The same analysis put the main roofing company and replacement terms at about $60 to $1001.
  • Material searches are research. “Cedar fence” ($10.60) and “vinyl fence” ($8.67) sit in the national top 12 with low bids1. Chain link terms appear in the top 12 of 31 state reports, vinyl in 21, and privacy fence in 111. Many of these searchers may be pricing a DIY job or still deciding.
  • States vary. California, Texas and Florida are the broadest fence markets by distinct terms. Washington sits among the highest median top-of-page bid estimates, with “fence company near me” at $87.69, while West Virginia and New York are among the lowest1. Nevada’s median looks high but rests on few terms, so read it with care.

Demand is mostly planned, with a repair tail after wind storms and accidents. Repair terms appear in the top-12 lists of 15 of the 42 state reports1.

What is a fence customer and a lead worth?

Table 03.1

Land survey to confirm the line$200 to $545HomeAdvisor2

HomeAdvisor is an Angi brand that sells leads, so treat these as vendor data. Material swings the ticket: HomeAdvisor’s ranges run from $1,650 to $8,300 for chain link to $5,250 to $11,400 for wrought iron2.

Worked example: what one fence lead is worth

Illustrative inputs, not sourced benchmarks. Replace them with your own numbers.

  • Average ticket: $3,2772
  • Leads that become an on-site estimate: 70%
  • Estimates that close: 35%
  • Gross margin after materials, labor and commission: 35%

Lead to job: 0.70 × 0.35 = 24.5%. Gross profit per job: $3,277 × 0.35 = $1,147. Gross profit per lead: 0.245 × $1,147 = about $281.

That $281 is break-even before overhead. A common rule of thumb is to pay no more than a third of it, about $95, so the job also covers the office, trucks and profit.

Now test paid search. If you pay $20 a click (below the $26.46 estimate1) and 8% of clicks become a lead, each lead costs $250. That is close to break-even, so head terms only work if your page converts better or your close rate is higher. LocaliQ’s vendor benchmark for home services overall found a $7.85 average click, a 7.33% conversion rate and a $90.92 average cost per lead9. If your fence campaigns land near those numbers, paid search pays well. If you are paying near the top-of-page estimate, it barely breaks even.

Repair leads: at $6183, a 50% close rate and a 45% margin, a repair lead is worth 0.50 × $618 × 0.45 = about $139. Repairs look marginal, but a customer with a sagging 15-year-old wood fence is the best replacement lead you will get. Track repair customers for two years and count the replacements before you cut repair spend.

Google Business Profile and the Map Pack

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity (its help page covers the third factor under the heading “Prominence”, meaning how well-known a business is), that more reviews and positive ratings can help, and that you cannot pay for a better local ranking7. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 68% of consumers will only use a business with four or more stars, and 74% seek reviews written in the last three months30. A fence is visible from the street, so ask for a review and a photo the day the job finishes.

Use your real business name, no keywords added, and keep the service area within about two hours of driving from your base8. A rented mailbox you do not operate from is not eligible8.

Local Services Ads

“Fencing services” is an eligible US Local Services Ads category4. You pay per valid lead, lead prices vary by location, job type and lead type, and you set an average weekly budget with a monthly cap5. Google credits leads it judges invalid or low quality5. Google began moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals in August 2026, starting with select home service advertisers such as plumbing, HVAC, roofing and pest control, with broader groups in late 2026 and remaining categories in 20276. Fencing is not named in the first-phase list, so watch your account notices: Google says it emails 14 days before your migration, and weekly budgets become daily budgets6.

The low median bid ($6.321) hides the fact that most of those terms are research. Rules that help:

  • Bid on company and installation terms (“fence company near me”, “fence installation near me”, “fence contractors near me”). These are the buyers.
  • Bid lightly on material terms, or send them to a page with real price ranges per foot so researchers become quotes.
  • Add negatives for DIY and retail: “panels”, “kit”, retail store names and “how to”.
  • Run a separate repair campaign, since repair intent is urgent and the ticket is smaller.

Builders, pool companies and property managers

Fencing has trade partners that send repeat volume:

  • Pool builders. New pools usually need a barrier or other safety feature. Florida’s statutory barrier standard, for example, calls for a barrier at least 4 feet high on the outside, with no gaps a child could get through, and gates that open outward, self-close and self-latch16. A fence company that knows the local barrier code and passes inspection the first time is easy to refer.
  • Home builders. New subdivisions need backyard fencing at or after closing. Price is tight, but crews stay busy and neighbors see the work.
  • Property managers and HOAs. Repairs, gates and replacement runs, often with recurring work.

Storm and insurance repair

Wind storms knock down fences. Standard homeowners policies cover fences under “other structures”, with a combined limit for all other structures of 10% of the dwelling limit17. Whether a given storm loss is covered depends on the policy. That makes storm fence repair a real channel, but keep it clean: in Texas, anyone selling goods or services paid from a property insurance claim may not advertise or promise to waive the deductible or offer a rebate to offset it without the insurer’s consent, contracts of $1,000 or more must carry a deductible notice, and a violation is a Class B misdemeanor18. Other states have similar rules; the roofing hub covers several.

Lead marketplaces

Angi’s 2025 annual report says pros pay for consumer matches “regardless of whether the Pro ultimately provides the requested service”10. Thumbtack says it has no membership fees and that pros set their own budget for leads11. In 2023 the FTC finalized a consent order against HomeAdvisor, with up to $7.2 million in redress, settling allegations about lead quality, source and how often leads turned into jobs12. Marketplaces can fill a schedule, especially early. Measure your own close rate on them for 90 days, and answer instantly, because shared leads reward the first caller.

05Chapter3 min

Which laws and rules affect how fence companies get leads?

This is not legal advice. The rules below are examples; check your state and city with a construction attorney.

Licensing and license numbers

  • California: A C-13 Fencing contractor builds and repairs all types of fences, corrals, railings, gates and barriers, excluding masonry walls19. Licensed contractors must put their license number in all advertising, with a civil penalty of $100 to $1,000 for a first offense20. Since January 1, 2025, unlicensed persons may do minor work only under $1,000 and only if the work needs no permit and they hire no workers, and they must state in any ad that they are not licensed21.
  • New Jersey: Home improvement includes fences22, and registered contractors must show their registration number on all advertisements, contracts and correspondence, plus “HIC reg. #” in one-inch letters on both sides of commercial vehicles23.
  • Maryland: Home improvement includes building or replacing a fence on land next to a home24. You may not take payment before the contract is signed, or a deposit over one-third of the contract price25.
  • Pennsylvania: Fences are listed as home improvement on jobs over $500. Contractors must include their registration number in all advertisements, and buyers can rescind within three business days regardless of where the contract was signed26.

Permits, property lines and HOAs

Many cities require a fence permit and cap height. Rockford, Illinois, for example, requires a permit for all fences, limits front-yard fences to 4 feet and side and rear fences to 6 feet, and requires the finished side to face the neighbor or the street15. HomeAdvisor suggests checking local code and HOA height rules and paying $200 to $545 for a survey when the line is unclear2.

The marketing point: these are the steps homeowners dread. A quote page that says “we pull the permit, check HOA rules and order the 811 ticket” answers objections that stall a sale.

811 before you dig

811 is the free national before-you-dig service, and the Common Ground Alliance says to contact it a few business days before any digging, including installing fences and mailboxes14. It reports about $30 billion a year in repairs and societal impacts from damage to buried utilities and says not contacting 811 is the top driver of those damages14. Some utilities are buried only inches down, so post-hole depth is not a safe excuse14. State one-call laws set the exact notice period.

In-home sales and financing

A sale of $25 or more made at the buyer’s home triggers the FTC Cooling-Off Rule: three business days to cancel, two copies of a cancellation form and a dated contract that explains the right27. If you advertise payments (“a new privacy fence for $99 a month”), Regulation Z requires the down payment, repayment terms and APR in the same ad28.

Reviews

The FTC’s 2024 rule bans fake reviews, incentives conditioned on positive reviews, undisclosed employee reviews and review suppression, with civil penalties for knowing violations29. Asking every customer for an honest review is fine.

06Chapter1 min

When does fence demand peak?

The sourced data on this page does not give a month-by-month demand curve. Many operators see a spring and summer peak and a winter slowdown where the ground freezes, plus short repair spikes after wind storms, but check that against your own numbers. Export two years of Search Console clicks, calls and form leads by week, and mark storm dates. Use the slow season for builder and pool partner outreach and to book spring installs with a deposit that stays within your state’s limit2526.

07Chapter1 min

What mistakes do fence companies make with leads?

  • Slow quotes. In the HBR audit of 2,241 firms, 23% never responded to a web lead and the average response among those that replied within 30 days was 42 hours. In a separate study of 1.25 million leads described in the same article, firms that tried within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify the lead as those that tried even an hour later13. Fence buyers collect two or three quotes. Send a ballpark price per foot the same day.
  • Paying for research clicks. Material terms carry low bids for a reason1. Do not let them eat the budget meant for “fence company near me”.
  • Skipping the paperwork pitch. Permits, HOA approval, surveys and 8111415 stall jobs. Handle them and say so in your ads.
  • Missing license numbers in ads. California, New Jersey and Pennsylvania all require them202326.
  • Deductible offers on storm work. Illegal in Texas and risky everywhere18.
  • Counting leads, not jobs. A channel with more leads and half the close rate costs more per job.

A 90-day lead plan for a small fence company

Plan 08.A / Weeks 1 to 12 3 phases

Days 1 to 30Fix the foundation

  1. W1Audit your Google Business Profile: real name, “Fence contractor” category, service area within about two hours8, 20 job photos tagged by town and material.
  2. W1Set up call tracking by channel and a sheet with lead source, estimate date, contract date and contract value.
  3. W2Build a quote page with real price ranges per foot by material2 and a short form. Promise a ballpark the same day.
  4. W3Put your license or registration number on the site, ads, trucks and contracts where your state requires it202326. Add Cooling-Off notices to in-home contracts27.
  5. W4Text a review request to every customer from the last 12 months29.

Days 31 to 60Turn on paid demand

  1. W5Launch Local Services Ads for “Fencing services” in your core zip codes with a weekly budget you can afford to learn on45.
  2. W6Launch paid search on company, installation and repair terms. Use the state bid data as a ceiling, not a target1.
  3. W7Visit five pool builders, two home builders and three property managers. Bring a one-page sheet on your permit and pool barrier process16.
  4. W8Add yard signs (with permission) on every finished job and a door hanger for the neighbors.

Days 61 to 90Measure and cut

  1. W9Calculate cost per signed contract by channel, using the worked example above.
  2. W10Cut any channel above your break-even cost per lead with no contracts, and move the money to the best one.
  3. W11Write one service page per town and per main material (wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum) with real projects.
  4. W12Write a storm playbook: repair pricing, photo documentation for insurance, and a script that never discusses the deductible18.

09Chapter1 min

Bottom line

  • Fence buyers search for a company, so the Map Pack, Local Services Ads and fast quotes do most of the work.
  • Fence clicks are cheap next to other trades ($26.46 top-of-page estimates on the head terms), so paid search can pay if you avoid research terms.
  • A typical fence lead is worth a few hundred dollars in gross profit; set your cost-per-lead ceiling from your own close rate and margin.
  • Pool builders, home builders and property managers are repeat channels most small fence companies underuse.
  • Permits, HOA rules, surveys, 811 and license numbers in ads are both legal duties and selling points.

10Questions owners ask5 questions

Questions owners ask

Q01Are Local Services Ads worth it for fence companies?

Often, yes. "Fencing services" is an eligible US category, you pay per valid lead rather than per click, and Google credits leads it judges invalid. Track each LSA lead to a signed contract for 60 to 90 days, compare the cost per job with your other channels, and report leads that are not real fence inquiries through the lead feedback survey.

Q02What is a good cost per lead for a fence company?

It depends on your ticket and close rate. With a $3,277 average job, a 24.5% lead-to-job rate and a 35% margin, a lead is worth about $281 in gross profit. Many operators aim to pay no more than a third of that, about $95, to leave room for overhead and profit.

Q03Who is responsible for calling 811 before installing a fence?

Whoever digs should make sure it happens. The national 811 service is free and asks for contact a few business days before any digging, including fence posts. State one-call laws set the exact notice period and who must call, so check your state and build the ticket into your scheduling.

Q04Can a fence company help with an insurance claim after a storm?

You can quote the repair, and homeowners policies usually cover fences under other structures. Do not offer to cover or waive the deductible. Texas, for example, makes advertising or promising a deductible waiver on insurance-paid work, without the insurer's consent, a Class B misdemeanor.

Q05Do I need a license to build fences?

It depends on the state. California has a dedicated C-13 Fencing classification and requires a license for jobs of $1,000 or more, and for smaller jobs that need a permit or use hired workers. New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania treat fences as home improvement, which brings registration or licensing and license-number rules for ads.
