The brief

Short answer

Most aquarium searches are hobby and retail searches, so do not rely on ads alone. Build a portfolio site and Business Profile that show finished installs, win referrals from interior designers, architects, builders and restaurant owners, and sell maintenance contracts with every build. Price on build plus service value, and plan structural, licensing and livestock rules into every quote.

  • Fact 01Water weighs about 62.3 pounds per cubic foot at 70 F, and seawater is denser than fresh water.2
  • Fact 02The residential code's minimum design live load is 40 pounds per square foot for areas other than sleeping areas and 30 for sleeping areas.3
  • Fact 03In California, unlicensed work is limited to jobs under $1,000 that need no permit and use no employees, as of January 1, 2025.4
  • Fact 04The Lacey Act makes it unlawful to sell, buy or transport fish or wildlife taken, possessed, transported or sold in violation of U.S. law.5

Custom aquarium builders sell a rare, expensive, emotional purchase to two very different buyers: homeowners who want a showpiece, and businesses (restaurants, hotels, offices, medical practices) that want a feature. Both decide mostly on what they can see: finished work, in person or in photos. The search box plays a smaller role here than in most trades, and recurring maintenance often matters more than the build.

02Chapter2 min

How do customers find a custom aquarium builder today?

Search demand for aquariums is large but almost all of it is hobby and retail demand. In the Strive analysis of Google Keyword Planner data from September 2025 to August 2026, the most-searched term nationally was “fish tank”, in the 100,000 to 1 million monthly range, followed by store and shop searches (“aquarium shop near me”, “fish tank store near me”) and reef and saltwater terms, each in the 10,000 to 100,000 range1. There were 762 distinct terms in the group1.

What that means for a builder:

  • Custom demand is small or not measured in the top terms. No “custom” term appeared in the top search lists of any of the 42 published state reports1. That does not mean nobody searches for it. It means the volume is too small to show up next to hobby searches, so do not plan the business around it.
  • Large-tank searches are the closest signal. Terms for 100, 120 and 300 gallon tanks or “large” and “big” aquariums appeared in the top lists of 7 of the 42 state reports1. In Massachusetts, “large fish tank” and similar terms carried a top-of-page bid estimate (high range) of $4.12, against a national median of $0.86 for the whole group1.
  • Clicks are cheap because most searchers are not buyers of a custom build. Nationally, store and shop terms topped out at $2.45 and reef terms at $2.351. These are Google’s top-of-page bid estimates for a click, not cost per click or cost per lead.

The largest state markets by distinct terms were California, Texas, Florida and New York1. Bid medians barely moved between states, from $0.77 in Michigan to $0.89 in Rhode Island1, so state choice matters less for ad cost than for the number of affluent homes and commercial venues in reach.

The broader hobby is big. The American Pet Products Association reports that 95 million U.S. households own a pet19. A small share of fish keepers upgrade to a custom system, and many of your best leads will be experienced hobbyists who outgrew a store-bought tank.

Commercial buyers rarely search at all. A restaurant owner hears about you from the designer, the architect or the general contractor on the project, or sees your work in another venue.

03Chapter2 min

What is a custom aquarium customer worth?

No neutral public cost guide covers custom aquarium builds, so the inputs below are illustrative. Use your own job history.

Worked example: build plus maintenance

  • Average custom build: $25,000 (illustrative)
  • Leads that become a paid design consultation: 40% (illustrative)
  • Consultations that become a signed build: 30% (illustrative)
  • Gross margin on the build: 30% (illustrative)
  • Builds that add a maintenance contract: 70% at $250 a month for 3 years, 40% margin (illustrative)

Lead to build: 0.40 × 0.30 = 12%. Build gross profit: $25,000 × 0.30 = $7,500. Maintenance gross profit per build: 0.70 × $250 × 36 × 0.40 = $2,520. Gross profit per lead: 0.12 × ($7,500 + $2,520) = about $1,202.

Maintenance adds about a third to the value of each lead in this example, and it is steadier money. It also keeps the tank healthy in front of the owner’s guests, which is where most referrals start.

Now test paid search. At the $2.45 top-of-page bid estimate for store terms1, if only 1 in 200 clicks becomes a real custom-build lead, each lead costs $490. That fits under $1,202, but only if you filter out supply shoppers. If 1 in 500 clicks converts, the lead costs $1,225 and the campaign loses money. Track consultations per 1,000 clicks before raising budget.

Worked example: why weight belongs in the first call

Water weighs about 62.3 pounds per cubic foot at 70 F2. A U.S. gallon is about 0.1337 cubic feet, so a 300-gallon tank holds 300 × 0.1337 × 62.3 = about 2,500 pounds of fresh water, before glass or acrylic, rock, sand and the stand. Seawater is denser still2.

If that tank sits on an illustrative 8-foot by 2.5-foot footprint (20 square feet), the water alone is about 125 pounds per square foot. The residential code’s minimum design live load is 40 pounds per square foot for areas other than sleeping areas3. That is why large installs need a structural engineer, and why asking about floor construction on the first call screens out jobs that cannot be built as imagined.

Designers, architects and builders

High-end residential and commercial jobs are often decided before the owner sees a quote. Interior designers and architects specify a feature, and builders need someone who can coordinate the framing, electrical, plumbing and access for service. Give them what makes their job easier: dimensioned drawings, weight and load notes for the engineer, a service access plan and a clear schedule.

Houzz Pro is built as business software for contractors and design professionals11, and a strong Houzz project gallery is one place designers look for specialty trades. A portfolio that shows how a tank was integrated (filtration room, access panels, lighting) speaks to designers more than a photo of fish.

Restaurants, hotels and commercial venues

Commercial tanks are bought by owners and specified by designers. The National Restaurant Association Show runs May 22 to 25, 2027 at McCormick Place in Chicago13, and HD Expo, a hospitality design show, runs May 4 to 5, 2027 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas14. Walking those shows to meet restaurant designers and hospitality firms can be worth more than a booth for a regional builder.

Commercial clients care about uptime and liability. Sell a service level: visit frequency, response time, livestock replacement terms and who handles cleaning in a public space.

Maintenance contracts

Maintenance is the recurring revenue and the referral engine. Many operators price service by tank size, system type (freshwater, reef) and visit frequency, and quote it with the build so the buyer sees the full cost of ownership. Contracts should spell out emergency calls, equipment replacement, livestock losses and price changes. A rule of thumb in service businesses: a customer who is visited monthly rarely shops for a new builder when they upgrade.

Portfolio website and project content

The buyer is choosing a craftsman, so the site should be a portfolio first. Pages that tend to work:

  • One page per project with size, materials, filtration, location type and timeline.
  • A “what does a custom aquarium cost” page with honest ranges from your own jobs and what drives price.
  • Planning guides on weight and floors, in-wall versus freestanding, and service access.
  • A maintenance page with what each plan includes.

Google Business Profile and Local Services Ads

Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, and there is no way to pay for a better local ranking8. If you have a showroom that receives customers, list it; if not, set up as a service-area business. A rented mailing address you do not operate from (a virtual office) is not eligible9. Aquarium services are not a Local Services Ads category in the United States10, so that channel is not available.

Social video and creators

Aquarium builds film well, and time-lapse build videos travel. If you give a creator a discount or free equipment in return for a video, the creator must disclose that material connection, and the FTC says a platform’s built-in disclosure tool is not automatically enough16.

Pet industry trade shows

Global Pet Expo, the pet industry trade show held each year in Orlando, runs March 17 to 19, 2027 and lists more than 1,200 exhibiting companies12. It is a supplier show more than a buyer show for builders, useful for equipment lines and distributor pricing.

Use it narrowly. Target large-tank, installation and local terms, exclude supplies, small tanks, betta and goldfish searches, and send clicks to a portfolio page with a consultation form that asks for room, size and budget. The data says most aquarium searchers are shopping for supplies1.

Financing

Large builds are often financed. Under Regulation Z, if an ad states triggering terms such as the down payment or the number of payments, it must include additional disclosures15. Let your lender approve any ad that mentions payments.

05Chapter2 min

Which rules affect how aquarium builders market and sell?

This is not legal or engineering advice. Rules vary by state and city.

Contractor licensing

Built-in aquariums involve framing, electrical and plumbing, which often need permits. In California, as of January 1, 2025, unlicensed work is limited to jobs under $1,000 that need no permit and use no employees; anything else requires a license, and unlicensed people advertising minor work must say they are not licensed4. Check your own state board before advertising in-wall or built-in work.

Structural loads

The weight math above23 is a sales issue as much as a safety one. Put “structural review for large tanks” in your process and your contract, and name who pays for the engineer.

Livestock

If you sell or stock fish and corals, wildlife law applies. The Lacey Act makes it unlawful to sell, buy or transport fish or wildlife taken, possessed, transported or sold in violation of U.S. law5. Federal rules list certain injurious species, including live snakehead fish, walking catfish and zebra mussels, whose import, transport or acquisition is barred except under permit6. A business that imports or exports wildlife commercially, including as a pet dealer, generally needs a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service import/export license7. Many states add their own prohibited species lists. Source livestock from suppliers who can document origin.

Reviews and testimonials

The FTC’s 2024 rule bans fake reviews and testimonials and allows civil penalties against knowing violators17. Ask every build and maintenance customer for an honest review, and never trade discounts for positive ones.

06Chapter1 min

When does demand for custom aquariums peak?

The sourced data here does not give a reliable seasonal curve for custom builds. Residential builds often follow home renovation and move-in timing, and commercial builds follow restaurant and hotel openings, which are set months ahead. Pull your own: log inquiries and signed builds by month for two years and plan crew time and marketing from that.

07Chapter1 min

What mistakes do custom aquarium builders make?

  • Buying hobby traffic. Most aquarium searches are for supplies and small tanks1. Filter hard or skip paid search.
  • Selling the build without the service. Maintenance adds steady profit and referrals.
  • Skipping the structural question. A 300-gallon tank is about 2,500 pounds of water2. Find out about the floor on the first call.
  • Advertising built-in work without the right license4.
  • Slow replies. In HBR research on 1.25 million leads at 42 U.S. companies, firms that tried to contact a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as those that tried even an hour later18. A high-end buyer contacts more than one builder.
  • A portfolio without details. Designers want dimensions, systems and access plans, not only photos.

  2. W10Test a small paid search campaign on large-tank terms with tight negatives1.
  3. W11Ask every satisfied customer for an honest review17.
  4. W12Decide whether a hospitality or restaurant show1314 fits next year’s budget.

09Chapter1 min

Bottom line

  • Most aquarium search demand is hobby and retail; custom demand is too small to show in the top terms.
  • Designers, architects, builders and existing customers drive most high-value work.
  • Maintenance contracts add steady profit and referrals to every build.
  • Weight, licensing and livestock rules belong in the first conversation, not the last.
  • A detailed portfolio is the core marketing asset in this trade.

10Questions owners ask5 questions

Questions owners ask

Q01Should a custom aquarium builder run Google Ads?

Carefully. Most aquarium searches are hobby and retail searches, and no 'custom' term made the top search lists in any of the 42 published state reports. Bid on large-tank and installation phrases in your area, exclude supply and small-tank searches, and judge the campaign on consultations booked, not clicks.

Q02Can a floor hold a large aquarium?

Not always. A 300-gallon tank holds about 2,500 pounds of fresh water before glass, rock and stand. The residential code designs living areas for a 40 pound per square foot live load, so a large tank can far exceed what the floor was designed for. Have a structural engineer review any large install.

Q03Do I need a contractor license to build in-wall aquariums?

Often. In-wall builds involve framing, electrical and plumbing, which usually need permits. In California, for example, any job that needs a permit, uses employees or is $1,000 or more requires a contractor license. Check your state licensing board before you advertise built-in work.

Q04How do maintenance contracts help an aquarium business?

They turn a one-time build into monthly revenue, keep the tank looking good in front of the owner's guests (which drives referrals), and put you first in line for upgrades. Write clear terms on visit frequency, emergency calls, livestock losses and who pays for equipment.

Q05What is the best way to get custom aquarium leads?

Do not rely on ads alone, because most aquarium searches are hobby and retail searches. Designers, architects, builders and existing customers drive most high-value work, so build a portfolio site and Business Profile that show finished installs and win referrals from interior designers, architects, builders and restaurant owners. Sell a maintenance contract with every build.
