The brief
Short answer
Search demand is small and expensive, so most work comes from referral partners who are present after a death or crime: police victim services, medical examiners, funeral homes, property managers and adjusters. Back that with a strong Business Profile, a 24/7 phone answered by a calm person, and paid search on a few exact terms. Never solicit grieving families.
- Fact 01OSHA has said its bloodborne pathogens standard applies to cleaning companies whose employees clean up blood and body fluids after homicides, suicides and unattended deaths.6
- Fact 02California requires trauma scene waste management practitioners to register with the Department of Public Health and pay a $200 annual fee.9
- Fact 03Texas Crime Victims' Compensation will pay up to $2,250 for crime scene clean-up costs for crimes after July 14, 2016.11
- Fact 04California's victim compensation board may reimburse up to $1,709 for crime scene cleanup, and only for work by a registered trauma scene waste management practitioner.12
Biohazard and trauma cleanup work starts with a death, a crime, an accident or a long-unattended illness. The people who need you are in shock, and the people who see these scenes every week (police, medical examiners, funeral directors, property managers) decide which number they hand over. That makes this a trust and referral business with a thin layer of search. This page covers both, plus the safety and state rules that partners will ask about.

02Chapter1 min
How do customers find a biohazard cleanup company today?
Search demand is small. In the Strive analysis of Google Keyword Planner data from September 2025 to August 2026, the national data held only a handful of distinct terms, and no state had enough volume to publish a state report1. “Biohazard cleanup” was the largest, in the 1,000 to 10,000 monthly search range, with a top-of-page bid estimate (high range) of $106.64. “Biohazard removal” sat in the 100 to 1,000 range at $82.551. These are Google’s estimates for a click, not a cost per lead.
Two cautions about that data:
- Some “biohazard” searchers want medical waste pickup, not scene cleanup. “Biohazard waste disposal” was in the same 1,000 to 10,000 range but with a bid estimate of $24.23, and several of the remaining terms are about waste disposal companies1. Those are usually clinics and businesses looking for a waste hauler. Exclude them unless you offer that service.
- The most expensive click in the data is the one you want. At about $107 a click for “biohazard cleanup”1, you cannot afford to waste calls. Paid search here only works with a phone answered live, day and night.
Most families never search at all. Someone hands them a card or a name. Your marketing job is to be the name that gets handed over.
03Chapter2 min
What is a biohazard cleanup customer and a lead worth?
Public price data is thin and comes from vendor sites.
| Service | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Biohazard cleanup, national average | $4,000 (typical range $3,000 to $5,000; low $1,500, high $25,000) | Fixr2 |
| Unattended death cleanup | $200 to $300 per hour | Fixr2 |
| Crime scene and after-death cleanup | $400 to $600 per hour | Fixr2 |
| Odor control | $75 to $100 per hour | Fixr2 |
| Medical waste | $2 to $20 per pound | Fixr2 |
Fixr earns money from home service leads and last updated this page in January 2025, so treat these as vendor data.
Worked example: what one lead is worth
Illustrative inputs, not sourced benchmarks.
- Average job: $4,0002
- Calls that are real scene cleanups in your area (not waste pickup or research): 60%
- Real calls that become a signed job: 60%
- Gross margin after labor, protective equipment, waste disposal and odor treatment: 40%
Lead to job rate: 0.60 × 0.60 = 36%. Gross profit per job: $4,000 × 0.40 = $1,600. Gross profit per lead: 0.36 × $1,600 = $576.
Now paid search. At the $106.64 high-range bid estimate for “biohazard cleanup”1, if 15% of clicks turn into a phone call, each call costs $106.64 ÷ 0.15 = about $711. That loses money against $576. At a $50 actual cost per click and the same 15%, a call costs about $333 and the math works. Decision rule: set a maximum cost per click from your own value per lead and click-to-call rate, and do not chase top position on head terms.
Compare a referral partner. An apartment management company with ten properties that sends three jobs a year is worth 3 × $1,600 = $4,800 in gross profit a year, with no click cost. Partners are the business; ads fill gaps.
04Chapter3 min
Where do biohazard cleanup leads come from?
| Rank | Channel | Pricing model | Best for | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Police victim services, medical examiners, coroners | Relationships | Crime and death scenes | Strict vendor rules; slow to earn |
| 2 | Funeral homes | Relationships | Unattended deaths | Many competitors call on them |
| 3 | Property managers, hotels, landlords | Relationships, service agreements | Repeat work, fast payment | Price pressure |
| 4 | Google Business Profile | Free | Families checking a name | Few reviews in this trade |
| 5 | Paid search | Pay per click | Families searching now | Very expensive head terms |
| 6 | Insurance adjusters and restoration partners | Relationships | Covered losses | Payer controls the scope |
| 7 | Local Services Ads (water damage) | Pay per lead | Water damage side of the business | No biohazard category |
Police, medical examiners and coroners
These offices meet families at the worst moment, and families often ask them who to call. Some offices hand out a neutral list rather than one name. Ask each office how a company gets on its list, what proof it wants (insurance, OSHA program, state registration where required), and follow that process. Never pay or give gifts to public employees for referrals.
Funeral homes
Funeral directors hear about unattended deaths before most people. Leave a one-page sheet that explains what you do, how families pay, and how you protect privacy, and answer the phone every time they call.
Property managers, hotels and landlords
Apartments, hotels and self-storage operators face deaths, assaults, overdoses and long-unattended units. They value fast response, discretion and a clean invoice. Offer a standing service agreement with set rates and a guaranteed response window. This is the closest this trade gets to repeat business.
Victim compensation programs
State crime victim compensation programs can be a payer. Texas pays up to $2,250 for crime scene clean-up for eligible victims, covering costs such as professional cleaning services and supplies11. California’s program may reimburse up to $1,709 for cleaning a crime scene in a residence or vehicle, only for work by a practitioner registered with the California Department of Public Health, and only for biohazard cleanup, not damaged property1218. Learn your state’s program and explain it to families. That alone sets you apart from firms that only quote a price.
Google Business Profile and the website
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity (its help page explains the third factor under the heading “Prominence”), and that more reviews and positive ratings can help16. Reviews are scarce because families rarely want to write about the event. Ask property managers and other business clients for reviews, and let families decline without pressure. The website should answer what grieving people need: who pays, what happens to belongings, how long the work takes, and that your vehicles can be unmarked.
Local Services Ads
Google’s Local Services Ads list has no biohazard or trauma cleanup category. Water damage services, house cleaning services and junk removal services are eligible3, and Google lists IICRC certification among the water damage requirements4. Many biohazard firms also do sewage and water damage work. If you do, LSA can feed that side of the business.
05Chapter3 min
Which laws and rules affect biohazard cleanup marketing and work?
This is not legal advice. Check your state, county and city with an attorney.
OSHA bloodborne pathogens
OSHA has said its bloodborne pathogens standard applies to a cleaning company whose employees clean up blood and body fluids after homicides, suicides and unattended deaths, even when the blood has been exposed to air for a day or more6. The standard requires a written exposure control plan reviewed at least annually, protective equipment such as gloves and face protection where exposure is anticipated, an offer of hepatitis B vaccination within 10 working days of initial assignment, and training at assignment and at least annually after5. OSHA also notes that regulated waste must be disposed of under the rules of the state and local government where you work6.
OSHA’s HAZWOPER standard is narrower than many sales pitches suggest. OSHA has said that a remediation company that cleans homes or businesses when no emergency has been declared, or after emergency responders have cleared the site, needs to comply only with the standards that apply to its operations7. Do not claim HAZWOPER certification as a legal requirement for residential scene work unless you do declared-emergency response.
State example: California trauma scene rules
California defines trauma scene waste as regulated waste removed from a trauma scene by a trauma scene waste management practitioner10. Practitioners must register with the California Department of Public Health, which issues a trauma scene waste hauling permit, and pay a $200 annual fee9. The department also requires proof of a contract with a registered transporter or a permitted medical waste facility that will receive the waste, and proof of proper disposal at renewal8. CDPH publishes the list of registered practitioners8, and California’s victim compensation board pays only registered firms12. If you work in California, registration is both a legal duty and a marketing asset.
Selling in the home
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule covers consumer sales of $25 or more made at the buyer’s home after personal solicitation, including when the buyer invited the seller. A narrow exception covers buyer-initiated emergencies when the buyer gives a separate, signed statement in their own handwriting describing the emergency and waiving the three-day right to cancel14. Whether a call after a death meets that test depends on the facts, and the paperwork must be exact. Have an attorney review your contract.
Taxes: Texas as an example
The Texas Comptroller says tax is due on the charge to clean a home or other building when a cleaning business does the work15. Whether biohazard remediation counts as taxable cleaning in your state is a question for the state tax agency or a tax professional, so check before you quote.
Advertising
Google Ads does not allow violent language, gruesome or disgusting imagery, graphic accounts of physical trauma, or gratuitous portrayals of bodily fluids or waste13. Scene photos in ads will get them disapproved and will upset the people you want to help. Never use details of a local news event in ads, and never contact a family because you saw their tragedy in the news. Partners stop referring to firms that do.
06Chapter1 min
When does biohazard cleanup demand peak?
There is no reliable sourced seasonality data for this trade, and the search volume is too small to show a monthly pattern1. Demand follows deaths, crimes and accidents, not the calendar. Many operators report that unattended death calls rise in hot weather because odor reveals them sooner, but treat that as a rule of thumb. Track calls by type and month in your own records for a year before you plan around a season.
07Chapter1 min
What mistakes do biohazard cleanup companies make with leads?
- Missed calls. In HBR research on 1.25 million leads at 42 U.S. companies, firms that tried to contact a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that tried even an hour later17. In this trade the family or manager calls the next number on the list. Answer 24/7 with a person.
- Bidding on waste disposal terms. “Biohazard waste disposal” searchers usually want a medical waste hauler1. Exclude them.
- Chasing families. Unsolicited contact after a tragedy is a fast way to lose every agency referral.
- Selling fear. Scare copy and graphic photos break Google’s policy13 and erode trust.
- Skipping the safety program. Partners ask about OSHA compliance56. Without a written plan you are not on the list.
- Not knowing who pays. Families need to hear about insurance, landlords and victim compensation1112 before the price.

A 90-day plan for a small biohazard cleanup company
Plan 08.A / Weeks 1 to 12 3 phases
Days 1 to 30Compliance and trust
- W1Write or update your exposure control plan, vaccination offers, training records and protective equipment list5.
- W2Line up waste disposal through a registered transporter or permitted facility. In California, register as a trauma scene waste management practitioner89.
- W3Set up 24/7 live phone answering with a written script: express sympathy, confirm safety, explain the next step and who pays.
- W4Build a contract with clear scope and pricing, and the Cooling-Off Rule notice where the rule applies14. Learn your state’s victim compensation rules1112.
Days 31 to 60Partners
- W5List every police department, sheriff’s office, medical examiner or coroner, and victim services unit in your area. Ask each how vendors get on its list.
- W6Visit ten funeral homes with a one-page sheet: services, payment options, response time, privacy.
- W7Offer service agreements to the five largest apartment managers and hotels in your area.
- W8Complete your Google Business Profile with service area, hours (24/7 if true) and photos of crew and equipment, never scenes16.
Days 61 to 90Paid search and measurement
- W9Launch paid search on “biohazard cleanup”, “crime scene cleanup” and “unattended death cleanup” style phrases, with waste disposal terms excluded1. Set a maximum cost per click from the worked example.
- W10Track every call by source, type of scene, payer and outcome.
- W11Send each referring partner a short note when a job is complete, with no scene details.
- W12Cut paid terms that produced no jobs, and put the time into the partners that sent work.
09Chapter1 min
Bottom line
- Biohazard cleanup has very little search demand and a top-of-page bid estimate above $100 for its main term, so partners matter more than ads.
- In the worked example a lead is worth about $576, while the high-range bid estimate for “biohazard cleanup” can make a call cost more than that.
- OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard applies to blood cleanup work, and states such as California add registration and waste rules.
- Victim compensation programs in states like Texas and California can help families pay, and knowing them sets a firm apart.
- Never solicit families after a tragedy, and keep ads free of graphic imagery.
10Questions owners ask5 questions
Questions owners ask
Q01How do biohazard cleanup companies get referrals?
From the people at the scene or right after it: police and sheriff victim services units, medical examiners and coroners, funeral homes, apartment and property managers, hotel managers, insurance adjusters and estate attorneys. Each one needs a short list of firms that answer at any hour, work discreetly and handle the paperwork. Get on those lists through the office's own vendor process.
Q02Who pays for crime scene cleanup?
It varies. Families, property owners, landlords and insurers all pay in different cases, and state victim compensation programs can reimburse part of the cost. Texas pays up to $2,250 for crime scene clean-up, and California up to $1,709 when a registered practitioner does the work. Check coverage with the payer before you start when you can.
Q03Do I need a license for biohazard cleanup?
There is no single national license. Federal OSHA rules on bloodborne pathogens apply to your workers, and some states add their own rules. California requires trauma scene waste management practitioners to register with the Department of Public Health and contract with a registered transporter or permitted facility for the waste.
Q04Can I advertise on Local Services Ads?
Not as biohazard cleanup, because there is no such category. Google lists water damage services, house cleaning and junk removal as eligible categories, so a firm that also does water damage can advertise that service. Expect water damage leads, not trauma scenes.
Q05What is the best way to get biohazard cleanup leads?
Search demand is small and expensive, so most work comes from referral partners who are present after a death or crime: police victim services, medical examiners, funeral homes, property managers and adjusters. Back that with a strong Business Profile, a 24/7 phone answered by a calm person, and paid search on a few exact terms. Never solicit grieving families.
